Yes. This policy does not apply to motorized wheelchairs or other mobility assistance devices approved through the Office of Disability Services. These devices are permitted in all areas necessary for accessibility.

No. Shared scooter programs are not currently permitted. A phased rollout may be considered in the future.

Scooters may not be ridden on sidewalks, pedestrian pathways, or within the campus core. Use is limited to designated internal roads leading to approved parking areas.

Only at designated outdoor scooter racks. Parking next to buildings, trees, benches, or handrails is prohibited. A campus map will be available online and posted at key locations.

No. Indoor storage or charging is strictly prohibited due to fire safety regulations.

Yes. All privately owned scooters must be registered with UMPD. Registration is free and includes a U-lock and access to Wellness Center restrooms. Click here to register your scooter

Violations may result in citations, impoundment, and disciplinary action. Impoundment fees start at $25, plus $5/day for storage.

The Office of Parking & Transportation leads enforcement, with support from UMPD. The Dean of Students’ Office will handle egregious violations.

While not mandated, helmets are strongly encouraged. They significantly reduce the risk of head injuries.

By restricting scooter use in pedestrian-heavy areas and enforcing proper parking, the policy ensures that walkways and building entrances remain accessible to individuals using wheelchairs, canes, or other mobility aids.

During the first 60–90 days of implementation, the University will focus on education and awareness. Violations may result in warnings rather than citations, and staff will be available to answer questions and assist with compliance.

Designated scooter parking areas will be clearly marked with signage. A campus map showing all approved locations will be available online and posted at key entry points.

No. Scooters may not be stored or charged inside any campus building, including residence halls, offices, classrooms, or common areas. This is a violation of the fire code.

You can report violations to Parking and Transportation Services or UMPD. If you feel comfortable, you may also politely inform the rider of the policy.
